Unlike the game's other DLC, campaigns were purchased from the game's main menu, found under the "Pave a new future" option. The digital release on the Nintendo eShop works similarly, in that the player chooses one campaign after purchase and had to purchase the other as DLC. To play the other campaign without purchasing the other version at full price, owners of one campaign have to buy the other campaign as DLC for somewhat less than the price of the basic retail game. The standard physical edition of Fates is divided into two versions, Birthright and Conquest, each containing only one of the campaigns. With the exception of the DLC campaigns, purchasing and accessing DLC was again handled through a location on the game's world map, the Dragon's Gate, which the player could access from Chapter 6 onward. The use of DLC in Fates was heavily expanded upon compared to its predecessor.
